ALMAH
ALMAH (Heb. עַלְמָה), Israeli moshav on a basaltic plateau N. of Safed. Almah is affiliated with Ha-Po'el ha-Mizrachi. It was founded in 1949. In 1953 the original settlers, who came from Libya, were joined by the proselytes of san nicandro , Italy, who later moved to other places in Israel. In 1968 Almah's inhabitants were from Libya and Tunisia. The economy was based on hill culture (vineyards, deciduous fruit, vegetables) and beef cattle. In 2002 the population was 732. The name Almah is historical, mentioned by benjamin of Tudela in the 12th century. (Efraim Orni)
